Philosophies

This is a guide to my thinking and philosophy.  It is intended to be neither prescriptive, nor all encompassing.  It is not so much a set of 'rules', rather, a statement of intent.  Please consider. 

1.  Our main purpose is to protect the people.  Never lose sight of that fact.  

2.  Reflect on what Sun Tzu says:  “Regard your soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys; look upon them as your own beloved sons, and they will stand by you even unto death.”  

3.  And so it is that the person at the front line is the most important person in the hierarchy.  Everyone else exists to support them.

4.  Our citizens are our partners.  We help protect what is important to them.  

5.  Service to mankind in time of need is the most noble of causes.  

6.  Act fairly, honestly and with integrity - always and in all ways.  

7.  Focus on the mission with calm determination.

8.  Show uncommon commitment in what you do.

9.  Take responsibility for your actions.

10. Never sacrifice your values.

11. Be good at your job. Know what is expected of you. Practice.  Be the best you can be.

12. We work in teams.  Cooperation is about everyone kicking in the same direction.

13. Be aware of the situation around you.  Our workplace is disorderly.  It can change quickly and can be unforgiving.

14. Information saves lives.  Note what you hear.  Share it.

15. Your gear can save your life. Look after it.

16. Think ahead.  Exercise foresight.  Anticipate surprises before they ruin your day.  

17. To lead men and women is a rare and great privilege.  Make the most of it.

18. Leaders create direction; they support their people; they stay positive.

19. In planning, value simplicity.

20. Seek to improve yourself.  Search for knowledge and understanding.

21. Each of us has a responsibility to pass wisdom on to future generations.

22. Make camp on high ground with the sun on your face.

23. Always eat a good breakfast.

Life can become hectic. It’s useful to look at our own priorities. These priorities have been good guidance for me:

• Self

• Purpose

• Team and

• Time to think
